The term Martial Arts is an all encompassing term that means The Art of War. it is taken from the name Mars the Roman god of war. In the sense that martial arts are simply the art of war all forms of combat that are codified and traditional in their teaching can be considered martial arts regardless of their national origin.
In the popular sense, however, most martial arts are thought of as being of Asian origins, but even here we see a variety of forms and differing styles, and many of these varying forms are connected in some way with their own religious believes or philosophical viewpoints.
Martial arts supplies like the forms they support are many and varying. Sai, Swords, Nunchakus, Tonfas, Bo Staffs, and Kamas are just some of the weapons that studios might choose to train with, but these weapons are strictly for those trained to use them and can even be illegal to own in some places. Most studios that train with these will not ask their students to purchase them, but instead they will provide them as supplies of the center to be used under careful supervision.

Kids karate belt levels?
My 5yr old nephew currently has a green belt and is testing for his camouflage belt soon. I am not familiar with the karate belt levels at all. Is this pretty good for a 5yr old? If so, I owe him some rebreakable karate kick boards, where do I get these??
If this is something he enjoys, I would like to encourage this activity.

He started when he 3yrs old and will be 6 yrs in Oct. So he's been at it for nearly 3 yrs now. I will check out the source for boards.
well at my studio you have to be 7 to start the kids program, and 4-6 year olds do little ninjas which is an entirely different belt system and they go through much quicker. once they get to little ninja blackbelt they move up to the kids program as an orange belt (3rd belt). but i know there are many other studios that are much different.
